DBT skills classes have been shown to be effective for people who have challenges regulating emotions, managing stress, are struggling in relationships, or feel that their moods and emotions are controlling their life. DBT skills are an adjunct to individual therapy.
Our classes are offered for those who are in comprehensive DBT treatment as well as others in individual therapy, either with someone here at our Center or someone they may already be working with. This will be discussed at the initial intake session. DBT is an evidence-based therapy and the skills are integral to the work. Most people find what they learn in these classes to be very helpful in creating meaningful changes to sustain a life with more awareness and joy.
Our classes meet weekly. The curriculum is divided into three 8-week modules. We ask for a commitment of one module at a time (8 weeks), after which you can choose whether you want to continue for the next 8 weeks. We teach the Core Mindfulness Skills the first two weeks of each module, with the following 6 weeks being either Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, or Interpersonal Effectiveness. We have Adult, Young Adult, and Parent programs.
Currently all of our classes meet virtually.
The DBT Skills modules are:
-
- Core Mindfulness Skills: Skills to increase the ability to be present and non-judgmentally aware in the moment. Taught at the beginning of each module.
-
- Distress Tolerance Skills: Skills to manage difficult feelings without acting impulsively.
-
- Emotion Regulation Skills: Skills to prevent or decrease difficult emotions or their intensity while building experiences of positive emotions and a values driven life.
-
- Interpersonal Effectiveness Skills: Skills to support effective communication with others especially when emotion is taking over.
We have classes for both the young adult and adult population, as well as an 8 week class for Parents. Please note that we do not have classes for teens.
If you wish to join a group and the start date has passed it may be possible to join during the 2nd or 3rd week if there are still available spots, please note the full rate of group will still be applied.

The classes meet weekly and people can join at the beginning of each module. We do not require people to complete all of the modules. Many clients choose to do so because they are in comprehensive DBT, and completion of all skills modules is part of their therapy commitment.
Others who are not in comprehensive DBT often choose to complete all of the modules because they find the material and group opportunity for learning to be very helpful.
All of our therapists have all been intensively trained in DBT, receive ongoing consultation and meet weekly for team clinical meetings.
