Yes. Our staff have all been intensively trained in DBT either by Behavior Tech, The Linehan Institute or an equivalent institute that has the same standards for treatment. We are on a weekly consultation team, provide phone coaching and teach weekly skills classes. We also receive regular consultation from DBT experts outside of the center.
DBT skills classes are psychologically-based academic courses wherein you will learn skills that will help you understand and regulate your emotions, as well as the way in which you relate to others. Our classes are 90 minutes, held weekly, and follow a structure of homework check-in, mindfulness exercise, and teaching of new skills.
The 3 core modules are Emotion Regulation, Distress Tolerance, and Interpersonal Effectiveness. We teach Mindfulness skills at the beginning of each of the modules.
Payment in full is required prior to the beginning of each module, and there is no refund for missed classes or if you drop out prior to completing the modules. To complete all of the modules (Mindfulness/ Distress Tolerance/ Emotion Regulation/ Interpersonal Effectiveness) would take be approximately 6 months, though we require a commitment to only one module (8 wks) at a time.
All of our group members are required to be in individual therapy, either here or elsewhere. The only exception to this is if you are taking the Parent Skills Class.
We have many people who take the classes who are not in need of full DBT treatment, but want to learn the skills to better manage their emotions.
Each module is a complete set of skills and when you sign up, you are only committing to that one module. We recommend that people go through all three as each set of skills matters in different contexts. Distress Tolerance skills help when you are feeling dysregulated, or “triggered” and need to have options for what to do to help you shift the intensity (or flatness) that you are feeling. Emotional Regulation helps when you need to understand what to do with what you are feeling, and how to create a values based life. Interpersonal Effectiveness gives you skills to help with skillful communication. All modules teach mindfulness. There is no “order” to take them in. You can join at the start of any of the 3 modules.
Once you go through all of the modules, you are able to join our Graduate Class.

The intake session is a 45-minute appointment in which you and your intake clinician will review your goals for therapy. The fee is $200. The intake appointment is not a full psychological assessment, but an opportunity to learn more about you and assess your ability to benefit from skills classes, individual therapy, DBT treatment or Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy, as well as to answer any questions you may have.
At times, clients desire a particular service, yet their current situation is such that they need something else in order to progress towards their goals. For example, you might want individual therapy, but your situation is such that full DBT (which means that you take a skills class along side of your weekly therapy, and you have access to phone coaching) would be more supportive. Or, you might be calling for Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy, and in your intake appointment, it becomes clear that attending skills group would support your treatment.
Clients who have an addictive relationship with substances may be required to attend an adjunctive program (12 step meetings or other adjunctive treatment).
While this does not happen often, at times we do refer people out – if it becomes clear that what we have to offer will not meet your needs.
It’s typical that you will continue with your intake clinician for your ongoing therapy or group services, although sometimes, if it seems like you will be a better fit with another one of our Team members or for a different service than the one you initially set out to come in for, that recommendation will be made during the intake meeting.
The first step is to read through our website to learn about our services and clinicians. If you feel we are a fit, then reach out here, or call our intake coordinator at 510.239.5698 to schedule an intake appointment. One of our team members will call you within 24 hours of the next business day.
