If you are interested in referring your client for DBT therapy or to one of our groups, we’d be happy to talk with you to see how we can work together to support your client.
Our skills classes are open to adults who are in individual therapy, with us or with an outside therapist. The groups have a range of attendees, and the group configuration changes from module to module – each module has some new participants as well as some continuing members. People are welcome to do several rounds of the modules, as many report that it’s not until the second round of going through the modules that they are able to integrate and engage more habitually with these skills..
Clients must complete all three modules before attending our Graduate Group. If a client has completed modules elsewhere, we can consider them for our graduate class on a case by case basis.
If you feel that your client needs DBT therapy, we are happy to speak with you to ensure this is the right referral for them. DBT therapy is a comprehensive treatment which includes participating in a full program of support modalities – individual therapy, skills group, and phone coaching, and is best done when the client is receiving these modes of treatment in a DBT center, where the therapists are in regular communication with each other. Because the style of therapy is specific and there is structure in how we support clients towards their goals, we ask that if you want to refer your client to our full DBT program, you consider your readiness to take a pause from working with them so that they can prioritize the goals and skills acquisition that we set with them as they establish a therapeutic relationship with our Team.
DBT therapy is different from being in DBT skills class alongside individual therapy with a non-DBT therapist. People who are in DBT treatment are part of the full program– individual therapy with a DBT therapist and in skills group. While it might appear that we are going overboard with specificity in defining the difference between a DBT-informed therapy or skills group + non-DBT therapy, it’s helpful to remember that for clients who have faced life-threatening responses to difficult emotions, the evidenced-based approach that this full program offers can be lifesaving.
If you want to coordinate care regarding your client who is in our skills class, please have your client inform us when they come in for an intake. Our general expectation is that clients in our skills classes who have outside therapists will be proactive in doing their homework and informing their therapist about what they are learning in class. We typically initiate care coordination with outside therapists if it appears that the client is dropping out of treatment or needs more support.
If you feel your client would benefit from more personalized support as they go through our groups, we’d suggest that they schedule “coaching” sessions where they can learn principles of DBT and behaviorism. Connecting what they are learning in class with their treatment goals is a coordinated effort between the client and therapist. These coaching sessions can happen alongside therapy with you. In this case, we would expect to talk with you to make sure we are on the same page about treatment goals.
